Item 1 of 2

In May 2015, I give a talk, ‘The Birth of the Modern Auction Market, 1971–1975 – A Personal Memoir’, in the context of a symposium, ‘Seen through the Collector's Lens: 150 Years of Photography’, presented by the Center for the History of Collecting at the Frick Collection, New York

For Christie’s Education programme, I make a series of short talks on aspects of the decorative arts and design. The introductory talk situates my engagement with this subject.

I joined this episode of Subtext & Discourse Art World Podcast.

I interview actress Vanessa Redgrave in 2016 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Antonioni's film Blow-Up at the invitation of the team behind Fashion & Cinema – a series of events, on-stage conversations and screenings exploring the relationship between fashion and cinema.

I discuss the earliest image made by photographic means, a ‘heliogravure’ from 1825 by Joseph Nicéphore Niepce, prior to its sale at auction in Paris in 2002. French museum authorities subsequently declare it a national treasure, and order that it must remain in France.

Matthias Harder, director of the Helmut Newton Foundation, engages me in an informal conversation on aspects of Helmut’s life, character, and career.

I am invited by photographer Martin Parr to talk about my involvement from 1971 in the beginnings of the auction market and the first auction dedicated to contemporary photography, organised in partnership with The Photographers' Gallery in 1975.

Tim Jefferies, owner of Hamiltons Gallery, initiates a conversation about their exhibition Helmut Newton: High Gloss, a superb presentation of rare ‘ferrotyped’ prints from the 1970s, celebrating the photographer’s centenary,

For Nick Knight’s SHOWstudio, I enjoy the opportunity to talk with Michael Avedon about his grandfather, the celebrated Richard Avedon.

Item 1 of 2

In 2013, I was interviewed by Marc Bervillé for the filaf annual no. 2, celebrating art, music and film, that he edited. This was published in Perpignan in alignment with a cultural festival. We found ourselves talking about the books, magazines, and related printed material that are so precious a part of my education. I present the full illustrated interview as published, in English and in French.

This conversation feature came about in the earliest days of Covid. Richard Rockwood came to see me at home. We were unsure of protocols. Masks? Distancing? We had not seen one another for years. The broad idea was to take a trip down memory lane to the Sixties, when we had first crossed paths in Brighton. We sat a yard or so apart, switched on a phone-mike, and started talking. We expected the Arena Homme + editor to trim and polish our words. He preferred to publish them as recorded, preserving their spontaneous character.
